SAFE, RELIABLE & FUTURE READY RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE
Every project is different, so we work closely with clients to shape solutions that are efficient, buildable and safe. Our engineers consider all the factors that matter for rail environments, including foundation behaviour, settlement, drainage, traffic loading, curvature forces and seismic performance. In addition, we include options for noise and vibration control and choices of modular, precast or landscaped facings.
Whether you need retaining walls alongside rail lines, cut and cover tunnels, ground stabilisation or noise and vibration mitigation, we can help.

Building bridges, crossings or tunnel structures above live rail lines often requires solutions that keep people safe and trains running. We help make this possible with systems that are practical, reliable and designed to minimise disruption to the railway below.
Bridge abutments
Our Reinforced Earth abutments make it easier to construct bridge approaches from the backfill side, reducing the amount of time workers need to spend near the tracks. This keeps possessions shorter and helps maintain train movements while work progresses. These abutments can also be adapted to suit challenging ground conditions and can be designed as true, mixed or integral systems depending on the needs of the project.
Precast rail tunnels and arches
Precast arches offer a straightforward way to create underpasses, wildlife crossings and cut‑and‑cover tunnels. They can be installed quickly, handle heavy loads and deep fills, and are versatile enough to match the geometry your site requires. Their speed of construction makes them ideal for situations where closing the railway is not an option or can only happen for short windows. They also work seamlessly alongside our reinforced soil systems for portals and approach structures.
Rail lines place significant demands on the structures beneath them, especially under heavy rail, mass transit and high‑speed operations. We provide systems that support these loads safely and help maintain performance throughout the life of the railway. They help maintain track geometry, reduce deformation and support long‑term asset resilience.
Reinforced Earth and precast retaining walls
Geoquest retaining walls provide strong, adaptable support for trackbeds and fast installation even in restricted environments
Geogrids
Our range of geohazards improve load distribution and help control settlement over soft or variable soils.
Many rail routes travel through landscapes where natural hazards pose risks to the track, structures or surrounding assets. We provide engineered solutions that help safeguard these areas.
Rockfall and avalanche protection
Our protective embankments and reinforced structures are designed to absorb and resist high‑energy impacts. They offer dependable protection in locations affected by rockfall, debris flow or avalanches and can be adapted to match the site’s terrain and risk profile.
Erosion and scour protection
Where railways run alongside rivers, streams or coastal environments, our CFM systems provide long‑lasting protection against erosion and scour. These solutions help maintain the integrity of rail embankments and structures exposed to flowing water.

What you can expect when you work with us
Ease of construction
Many of our structures can be built entirely from the backfill side, which reduces the amount of time your teams need to spend trackside and helps minimise disruption to live operations.
Reliable performance
Rail assets experience heavy loads, vibration and changes in geometry over time. Our solutions are engineered to manage these forces safely, helping you maintain track alignment, limit settlement and protect long‑term performance.
Protection for vulnerable rail alignments
Many rail routes are exposed to natural hazards such as erosion, rockfall or flooding. Our protective systems help safeguard your assets, whether that means stabilising slopes, shielding track from falling debris or preventing scour at water crossings.
Lower environmental impact
Using relatively thin sections results in lower consumption of concrete, steel, and land use, reducing carbon emissions while minimising environmental footprints.
Rail infrastructure is more than the tracks and structures that support it; it shapes how communities connect, travel and experience the world around them

Delivering the Structures Behind Scotland’s Borders Railway
The Borders Railway is one of Scotland’s most significant transport projects, reconnecting communities across a 30‑mile stretch from Edinburgh to Tweedbank. The route passes through villages, farmland and narrow corridors, which meant the project needed structural solutions that were dependable, flexible and easy to build within tight working areas.
To support the new line, our team designed and supplied 26 structures, including thousands of square metres of retaining walls. Many of these walls had to carry the weight and vibration of the railway itself while fitting into locations where space was extremely limited. Steel soil reinforcement was used in these areas to keep movement low, maintain long‑term stability and meet the project’s design life requirements.
Along the route, the railway had to cross roads, watercourses and existing infrastructure with as little disruption as possible. Our retaining systems and ramp structures helped make this achievable, keeping excavations shallow and enabling construction to take place mainly from the backfill side. This reduced impact on local communities and kept traffic flowing while work progressed.
We also supported new stations and pedestrian links, providing retaining walls for access ramps and footbridges in areas where space was restricted. Because the components are prefabricated and installed from the rear, they fitted well into these smaller, more sensitive locations.
The completed line has been widely recognised for its quality and positive impact on the region, and we’re proud to have played a part in delivering the engineering that sits behind it.
A reminder that well‑designed structures don’t just serve the railway, they strengthen the network as a whole.
