Solutions that help roads perform safely, reliably and for the long term

Road projects face unique challenges, from constrained corridors and changing ground conditions to the need to keep traffic moving. We support designers and contractors with practical engineering solutions that are straightforward to build and perform reliably over the long term.

Whether you’re upgrading existing routes or delivering new infrastructure, we can help support road projects of all scales and complexities.

  • Retaining walls alongside highways and local roads
  • Bridge abutments and flyovers
  • Road embankments and cuttings
  • Underpasses and culverts
  • Pavement and subgrade reinforcement
  • Slope stability and protection works
  • Flood, erosion and scour protection

From early ground challenges to long‑term asset performance, we help make complex road infrastructure projects achievable.

Roadside excavations and changes in ground level can introduce instability if not properly managed. We provide retaining wall solutions that help stabilise soft or variable soils, protect road infrastructure and reduce the risk of slope movement.

Reinforced Earth® systems are widely used to create safe, resilient and adaptable retaining structures, whether as single‑tier walls or multi‑tiered arrangements for more complex schemes. These solutions can be designed using steel or geosynthetic soil reinforcement and accommodate a wide range of backfill materials. Where required, our precast retaining systems also provide efficient, space‑saving alternatives.

Building road embankments often involves challenging ground conditions and strict spatial constraints. Using geogrid‑reinforced solutions, we help deliver embankments that are stable, buildable and cost‑effective.

Our engineered solutions support:

  • Embankments constructed over soft or weak soils
  • Embankments built over piled foundations
  • Embankments spanning areas affected by voids or subsidence

By strengthening the soil mass, these approaches improve performance while reducing the need for extensive ground replacement.

Understanding soil behaviour under long‑term traffic loading is critical to the performance of road infrastructure, particularly where bearing capacity is low. Our geogrid reinforcement systems, combined with specialist engineering support, help stabilise soils and deliver reliable pavement performance even in the most demanding conditions.

Compared with traditional construction methods, geogrid‑reinforced solutions can significantly reduce excavation requirements and the volume of aggregate needed. This improves buildability and efficiency, and lowers maintenance demands over the service life of the road.

Roads often need to pass beneath embankments, cross watercourses or maintain access for vehicles, pedestrians and wildlife. Precast backfilled tunnels provide a practical and efficient way to achieve this, whether delivered as cut‑and‑cover tunnels, arch structures or buried bridge solutions.

Our precast tunnel systems offer fast installation, consistent quality and reliable load‑bearing performance, even where ground conditions are challenging or construction windows are limited. A wide range of standard arch profiles with spans of up to 22 m is available, suitable for most road applications, alongside bespoke options where project requirements demand it. These structures can also be combined seamlessly with Reinforced Earth® spandrel and wing walls as part of a fully integrated solution.

To support early design and option development, our online design tool allows engineers to quickly explore tunnel and arch configurations, assess feasible geometries and download outline designs to suit their project needs. This helps teams move from concept to coordinated design more efficiently, with confidence that solutions are buildable and well‑suited to site constraints.

The transition between road embankments and bridge decks is a critical part of many highway schemes. Our retaining wall systems are widely used for access ramps and bridge approaches, providing reliable load distribution and accommodating settlement where required.

Whether supported on fill or piles, our earth‑retaining solutions are well suited to the specific demands of bridge abutments. They offer flexibility in design and construction, helping engineers respond to ground conditions, geometry and structural loading with confidence.

As traffic levels increase, road networks often need to be widened while remaining operational. Our retaining wall and reinforced soil solutions allow carriageways to be expanded where space is limited or where existing embankments are present.

Shored systems enable new retaining structures to be connected to existing ones, making them particularly effective for widening projects. Geogrid‑reinforced solutions also offer an economical way to extend roads over soft ground, reducing excavation, material use and construction time while maintaining service continuity.

New roads and highway upgrades often pass close to residential areas, where managing noise is an important consideration. Our sound wall solutions help reduce the impact of traffic noise while remaining straightforward to install, even in constrained environments.

Geoquest precast concrete facing panels can be customised with a wide range of architectural finishes, helping retaining structures blend into their surroundings or meet local design requirements. This flexibility allows engineers and designers to balance performance with visual quality across road infrastructure projects.

    Safety‑led construction methods

Designed to reduce risk, our systems limit site traffic, remove manual handling of facings and allow construction from the soil face, helping keep operatives safely away from live traffic, water and other hazards.

    Flexible for constrained sites

Our retaining walls, embankments and tunnel solutions make efficient use of space, helping road schemes progress where boundaries and corridors are limited.

    Reliable in challenging ground

From soft soils to complex ground conditions, our systems manage settlement and distribute loads effectively, supporting stable and dependable road infrastructure.

    Lower carbon, lower impact

Our solutions reduce the amount of concrete required, helping lower embodied carbon, and can incorporate noise‑absorbing layers to support quieter, more considerate road infrastructure.

Multi‑tier reinforced earth retaining walls supporting the A465 at Carno in South Wales

Delivering space‑efficient structures for one of Wales’ most important road upgrades

The A465 Heads of the Valleys Dualling project is a major transport scheme designed to improve safety, capacity and connectivity across South Wales. The new alignment passes through valleys, waterways and environmentally sensitive areas, presenting significant engineering and construction challenges.

To support the new dual carriageway, Geoquest provided a wide range of reinforced soil solutions, including high retaining walls, steep slopes, bridge abutments and cut‑and‑cover structures. In the Carno Valley, the road crosses the landscape on a large earth embankment supported by a multi‑tiered reinforced earth wall system, removing the need for a viaduct and allowing surplus site material to be reused efficiently.

At up to 33m high, the Carno retaining walls form the tallest structures of their kind in the UK.

Across the wider project, solutions were tailored to suit differing ground conditions, space constraints and environmental considerations. Working closely with the project team from an early stage allowed designs to be refined for buildability, durability and visual integration, helping the scheme progress safely and efficiently through construction.

Projects like the A465 show how thoughtful engineering can reduce disruption, make better use of materials and create infrastructure that works with the landscape around it. By focusing on practical, buildable solutions, we help road schemes move forward with confidence.
